The Loughborough Mela Group is a wide partnership comprising the ethnic minority communities within Loughborough, Charnwood Borough Council, Human Rights & Equalities Charnwood, John Storer Charnwood, Charnwood Arts, local community groups and dedicated individuals.
The word “Mela” originates from the Indian sub-continent meaning ‘to meet’, where it is traditionally a gathering of people celebrating their community. Loughborough Mela Organisers and the Committee strive to attract visitors from the various villages in the County, giving people the perfect opportunity to experience South Asian arts and culture in all its diverse and colourful forms. The aim of the event is to showcase Asian culture and heritage, and link it back to its roots, whist strengthening community and supporting local artists, businesses and community groups.
Taking place in Town Centre in the heart of the community of Loughborough, the Mela has become an important date in the calendar of the summer festival season, and there is more to Loughborough Mela than just music – the event also features stalls, fairground rides, a broad range of foods, children’s activities and a diverse entertainment programme. All visitors, young and old, will find something to entertain at this free event.
